Wordle is a free online word game. Josh Wardle, a Welsh software engineer, created and developed this game. Players have six chances to guess a five-letter word. Coloured tiles indicating when letters match or occupy the correct position providing feedback for each guess. Wardle created the game for himself and his partner to play. It will be released to the public in October 2021. Wardle added the ability for players to copy their daily results as emoji squares. They were widely shared on Twitter, in December 2021. There were numerous clones and variations of the game created, as well as versions in languages other than English.
The New York Times Company purchased the game in January 2022 for an undisclosed seven-figure sum, with plans to keep it free for all players; it was relocated to the company’s website in February 2022.

Multiple occurrences of the same letter in a guess, such as the “o”s in “notation,” will be coloured green or yellow only if the letter appears multiple times in the answer. otherwise, excess repeating letters will be grey.
- The game has a “hard mode” option that requires players to include green and yellow letters in subsequent guesses. Everyone has the same daily word. The game also includes a dark theme and a high-contrast theme for colour-blind accessibility. This changes the colour scheme from green and yellow to orange and blue respectively.
